History

On March 4, 1948 Aldo Leopold opened the introduction to A Sand County Almanac as follows: “There are some who can live without wild things and some who cannot. These essays are the delights and dilemmas of one who cannot.”

On March 1, 2008 --- sixty years after Leopold wrote those words --- Lodi and surrounding communities will come together once again to celebrate Aldo Leopold’s legacy. The 9th Annual Lodi Reads Leopold event will be a day to hear the words of Leopold and talk about what those words mean for the Lodi Valley community. Come celebrate Aldo Leopold with an event created for those “who cannot live without wild things.”

The 2008 Lodi Reads Leopold event will actually include activities on two days. On Thursday, February 28, Dr. Curt Meine, Senior Fellow with the Aldo Leopold Foundation, will present “The Life and Legacy of Aldo Leopold” at the Lodi Library. The celebration continues on March 1st with readings of Leopold’s works by local citizens, including youth, as well as youth representations of Leopold’s ideas through other creative expression. As part of the morning program there will be a community forum that will focus on “The Ethanol Equation: Plus or Minus?” A noon lunch will provide an opportunity to continue the discussion that took place during the community forum.
